P2 - Associazioni Unite dei Sordi della Regione dell'Umbria

AUSRU is a non-profit organization established in 2002 dedicated to promoting the social inclusion of Deaf individuals. To achieve this, the association organizes a variety of activities including meetings, cultural and sporting events, competitions, recreational and leisure activities, as well as courses, seminars, studies, and research. These initiatives are aimed at supporting Deaf and hard-of-hearing people in their struggle for the recognition of one of the most fundamental human rights: the freedom to be, to think, and to choose.

AUSRU’s core mission is to tackle and overcome communication barriers between Deaf individuals and the hearing world, particularly to combat the marginalization of Deaf people, with a special focus on the younger generation.

To fulfill its mission, the association offers assistance and support in areas such as insurance, taxation, fiscal matters, and legal issues, through volunteer services, all aimed at safeguarding the well-being, dignity, and safety of Deaf individuals. Additionally, AUSRU provides opportunities for hearing people learning Italian Sign Language to practice, interact, and immerse themselves in Deaf culture.

The activities organized by AUSRU are open not only to the Deaf community but also to anyone interested in learning more about Deaf culture and building stronger connections with the Deaf community.

In recent years, AUSRU has expanded its mission to the European level by participating in projects funded by the Erasmus Programme. These initiatives aim to promote accessibility and social inclusion for Deaf individuals across various educational sectors:

  • Youth Education: Enhancing the soft and vocational skills of young Deaf people to help them enter the workforce.
  • Adult Education: Providing knowledge and strengthening the skills of Deaf adults to improve their access to health information and music education.
  • Vocational Education and Training: Supporting workers in various sectors (such as museums, cultural institutions, music organizations, and universities) to acquire the skills necessary for effective communication with Deaf individuals.
